Chapter 11
Jah and Ebony lay on opposite ends of the worn down beige sofa in her living room. Love and Basketball—Ebony’s all-time favorite movie—was playing on the television set as Jah massaged her feet.
“So,” Jah began. “You and ya sister? Ya’ll cool?”
Ebony shrugged nonchalantly. “We’re straight,” she answered. “Why do you ask?”
“I mean, you never told me you had a sister…let alone a twin,” he added. “I figured you two must not be very close.”
“We aren’t joined by the hip,” she said sarcastically. “But we’re okay.”
Jah looked over at the television set. “But ya’ll aren’t super tight though.” It sounded more like a statement than a question.
“Not really,” Ebony said smugly.
Jah nodded. “Mmmhmm. Must got somethin’ to do with her dude then,” he mumbled.
Ebony quickly snatched her foot out of Jah’s hands and stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean by that?” she asked totally caught off guard by his statement.
“You ain’t think I noticed the way you and dude were looking at each other earlier?” Jah asked. “Baby girl, I ain’t live this long being no fool.”
“How were we looking at each other?” Ebony asked dumbfounded. “What are you talking about?”
Jah slowly reached for Ebony’s foot and gently replaced it in his lap. “I’ma tell you somethin’ right now,” he started. “You ain’t gotta front with me, bay. You can keep it all the way one hundred with me. I ain’t the type of nigga that’s gon’ judge you,” he promised her. “Hell, I ain’t no saint myself,” he told her. “Whatever you did in your past, that’s the past. I really don’t give a fuck ‘cause I live by the here and now, you feel me? Just be real with me, ‘cause I’ma always be real with you, Ebony.”
Jah was staring at Ebony intensely with those beautiful hazel eyes. As always, Ebony ended up looking away first. Something about his gaze…it just did things to her. Unexplainable things.
Ebony inhaled and exhaled deeply. What did Jah want her to say? She couldn’t admit that she’d been sleeping with her sister’s man for the past year. He could swear all up and down that he was not going to judge her, but surely he would feel some type of way about her after she told him such a thing. She didn’t want to ruin what they had by telling him that. What would he think of her? Hell, she barely knew what she thought of herself.
She opened her mouth and prepared to think up an excuse to change the subject but suddenly there was a knock at her side door. Saved by the bell!
“Who is that?” Jah asked her.
Ebony slowly lifted her foot from Jah’s lap. “I’m not sure,” she said.
“Do you want me to get it?” he offered.
“No. I got it.” She slipped her feet into her worn cotton slippers and noticed a small roach scurry beneath the couch. It was obviously taking shelter beside one of her slippers. “Damn roaches,” she cursed.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
“I’m coming! I’m coming,” Ebony called out.
